"I've seen three Point65 kayaks, but I'm not sure of the model names.
All three that I looked at would take the Top Mount Short Pin SmartTrack
System, so I'm guessing you're on the right track. Below I've detailed
the three SmartTrack mounting options so you can get a better feel for
each one.
Top Mount Long Pin: This version has a 3.875" long, 3/8" diameter,
stainless pin that drops completely through a molded hole or a bracket
on the stern of the kayak. Then, it is secured from below with a circle
cotter pin. Examples of this mounting style are seen on all Perception
Kayaks, many Dagger Kayaks, and all Wilderness Systems boats. If your
kayak does not have the molded hole or stern bracket to accept the 3/8"
pin, then you would need to contact the manufacturer to see if they
build such a bracket for the boat.
Top Mount Short Pin: This version, usually specific to composite
kayaks, uses a 1.875" long, 3/8" diameter stainless pin. To mount it,
you need to notch a flat horizontal shelf on the stern of the kayak and
then drill out an oversize 2+" deep cavity down into this flat shelf
(hence the need for composite construction). Then, you place a 3/8" ID
nylon bushing over the stainless rudder pin, fill the cavity with epoxy
or gel coat, and set in the rudder (with pin and bushing). Then, you
tape in proper alignment and let the epoxy harden. You usually also
place a 1/4 x 20 truss head screw or bolt just in front of the rudder
tiller to keep the rudder in place when the boat is upside down.
Examples of this mounting style can be seen on all Current Design
composite kayaks, as well as composite kayaks by Pacific Water Sports
and Boreal.
Rear Mount: This version mounts onto an angled stainless bracket that
has been bolted to a flat, vertical section of the stern. This flat
vertical surface needs to be about 3" tall by about 1" wide to support
this bracket. Once the bracket has been bolted to the stern, then the
rudder just slips over this bracket and is secured by a pin. Examples
of this mounting style can be seen on all Necky kayaks, as well as many
kayaks by Seaward.
