Off-piste försäkring

Hej

I'm not Swedish so apologies for the English and maybe obvious question.

Where can I get insurance for off-piste and ski touring? I am travelling independantly from Sweden to The Alps and Canada during the winter ánd want to be properly insured. Trygg Hansa tell me that I am insured but I'm skeptical since in Britian I always had to buy special insurance.

Anyone know??

Replies in Swedish ok it is just my written Swedish that is dodgy!

I used to have TryggHansa, but they refused to give a written statement saying that I was insured even offpiste. One woman I talked to at TryggHansa even said that they absolutely did not insure offpiste skiing.

That made me change to Länsförsäkringar that do insure for offpiste skiing in all countries as long as it is not an expedition and the skiing is below 4000 (I think) metres. They even send you a small card where it is written in English that the policy holder is insured for all treatment of injuries and other costs while offpiste skiing. Very nice guys indeed.

Hej Philippa!
Har du försäkrat dig mot glada nybörjarkurser i kajak? I ett alldeles utomordentligt speciellt väder?

My employer covered all insurance matters when I did a season in Verbier. But transport costs were not covered... Som helicopter operators provide a separate insurance that covers this part and can be useful to have incase the need arises. Usually this doesn't cost too either so it might be worth thinking about in any case.

If you visit France - get the "Carte Neige". Covers stuff like helicopter transport, 3rd party and even lost equipment (!) world-wide. It is valid for one year too. A real bargain!

Högrisktillägg or student-insurance

Hi Philippa!
I've had the same kind of problems with Trygg Hansa.

What I've learnt is that off pist skiing is covered only if you have the optional "högrisk-tillägget" in your olycksfallsförsäkring. It's a small cost, but you've got to have this. UNLESS, you're having a student insurance. If you do, this option is automatically there for you at no extra cost.

This was the case three years ago anyway...

Take care, Oskar

Danish company ihi

I have an travel insurance from the Danish company called ihi (international health insurance) and I mostly have the insurance in case of urgent heli-tansport when offpiste skiing. It has almost no limitations (maybe motor racing but offpiste skiing is covered). As Swedish citizen I pay approx 1500 SEK for one year valid worldwide.

/Patrik,

If it´s not too late I know a good insurance!
It´s German and called DSV. It´s valid all around the world and includes helicopter and also a very good insurance for your gear, first year your using your skiis for example you´ll get 100% back if you break them.
I suppose you can get it on an homepage, but I´ve always bought mine in Austria.

Good luck and have a great telemarkwinter!
