Walking in west Jämtland - Eye witnesses needed

We’re planning to make a trip to west Jämtland in June (week # 24) this year. We intend to walk from Storulvån to Gåsen and then to Helags and Sylarna before returning to Storulvån.

I am concerned because SMHI’s snowcover maps still show between 10 and 70 cm in the region!

Has anyone been in the area during the last few days that can give an assessment of the walking current conditions on the tracks - are they still snow covered or are they just wet? Drop a line and let me know.

Regards Stephen

snow

hello!
I was at blåhammarn about two weeks ago, and there was a lot of snow at some paths. But i went to Helags at the same time last year (around week 25) and it was quite ok (a bit cold though). But i guess you can expect some wet tracks...

ill hope you enjoy jämtland! :)

Att that time probably some snow left in pockets and very weat. Be prepared for cold weather. You have to make shure all stations are opened if you dont have a tent.

Hello Stephen, your hike sounds great and I believe you will have a good trip. As someone allready mentioned, the huts are still closed for the season, so bring a tent and all your food.

Regarding snow, the snow-cover reaches it´s peak in mid-to end of april in south-west Jämtland and this year the amounts were more than usual... and this snow is melting away right now so it will take some time before it´s gone ;).

Anyway, normally you should be ok in week 24, but be prepared to negotiate some wet ground and large snow-patches here and there.

However, if the springflood i delayed one or two weeks, you may also have to deal with snow-covered banks on the rivers and a lot of water, both which makes the rivers hard to cross. You can still travel there, but you may have to change your route and deal with difficult rivercrossings in a way that you normally wouldn´t have to.

Cheers,

//Johan

Hello Stephen,
We are a couple that will walk in that area next week. We will start in Ljungdalen on Wednesday and make a one week round trip around Helags and Sylarna. I think we will get snow on some parts. We do not have snow shoes. I can send you a report if you want.
