There is a new movie (in Nederlansk) being released on Dec 13

The movie is about the 1963 Elfstedentocht 200 km skating race in Friesland,

I think the outdoor skating scenes were filmed in Kemi, Finland

Some details

The few things I know about the film De hel van 63:

- the film is called "The hell of 1963" = "Helvetet av 1963" since the Elfstedentocht of 1963 is famous for its very, very bad circumstances. It is considered as the worst tour ever. Only 69 people out of 9294 participants reached the end within the time limit;

- the titlesong is from group De Kast, a pop/rock group from the province Friesland, where the Elfstedentocht is being held. They came together again after quite a long time, especially for this movie;

- our Prince Willem-Alexander (oldest son of our queen Beatrix) will attend the premiere of the film on the 13th of december 2009;

- the premiere of the film will be in the WTC Expo Hall in Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden is the town where the start and finish of the Elfstedentocht take place.

- three of the four main persons in the film had to take skating lessons before the shooting of the film started;

- former winners Reinier Paping and Jeen van de Berg play a small role in the film;

- not much opinions to be found yet on the internet about the realism of the skating, ice and weather scenes in the film.

So far, the film has not yet reached the news in Holland very often, but I think this will change in december.

Det ser ut att bli goda förutsättningar för skridskoåkning i Frisland närmaste tiden. Blir det ett 16:de lopp i år?

I returned from Sweden yesterday 2/1/10 (good skating in Värmland!) and to my surprise I could already skate today 3/1/10 in Holland, because on some undeep lakes and canals the old ice from december still was there. See some isobs on SN.

So far my hope for 16:de lopp i Friesland detta år is not big. Norr om linien Amsterdam - Hengelo (incl Friesland) there fell a lot of snow, already in december, but again also last night.

Best skating now in Holland is somewaht more to the south, like Nieuwkoop. Maybe big waters that are still open today can freeze coming week. Some very cold nights below -10 predicted.
